Tollstjóri - Taxes

Taxes we collect

The Directorate of Customs collects taxes for the icelandic government, and the city of Reykjavík.

Among others, the taxes we collect are:

  • National and municipal income taxes (tekjuskattur og útsvar)
  • Net worth taxes (eignaskattur)
  • Automobile taxes (bifreiðagjöld)
  • Road taxes (þungaskattur)
  • VAT (Value Added Tax) (virðisaukaskattur)

The Director of Internal Revenue assesses the taxes, except for the real estate taxes, they are assessed by the city of Reykjavík. Any questions concerning the assessment of the taxes should be directed to them.
