Over 40 shipments seized
Earlier this month a global operation targeting the criminal networks behind the sale of fake medicines via illicit online pharmacies resulted in the launch of over 40 investigations in Iceland. The Directorate of Customs and the Icelandic Medicines Agency jointly took part in the operation with support from the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police and Iceland’s liaison office at Europol.
During operation Pangea VIII a total of 43 shipments were seized in Iceland. Mostly containing nicotine liquids in total about five litres. In conjunction with the operation 28 shipments with food supplements containing drug substances or herbs with drug properties were also seized.
A total of 115 countries took part in the operation targeting the criminal networks behind the sale of fake medicines via illicit online pharmacies, resulting in 156 arrests worldwide and the seizure of USD 81 million worth of potentially dangerous medicines. 2,414 websites offering illicit pharmaceuticals for sale were taken offline.
