Temporary import of vehicles
The Directorate of Customs encourages importers of vehicles with foreign registration plates, who intend to use the vehicles temporarily in Iceland, to carefully read the regulations for temporary, duty free importation of vehicles.
Individuals who are resident abroad are permitted to import a vehicle with foreign registration, on a temporary basis, to Iceland for personal use only. The imported vehicle shall be accompanied by the importer, or no later than one month after his arrival to the country. If the individual concerned subsequently establishes residency in Iceland, then the vehicle must be cleared by customs or removed from the country. Only the importer or accompanying passengers, who are also resident abroad, have the right to use the vehicle during their visit. It is forbidden to use the vehicle for commercial purposes.
Individuals with permanent residency abroad, and who come temporarily to the country for the purpose of tourism may use their vehicle in the country for a maximum of 12 months, given that certain conditions are met. Individuals subsequently establishing permanent residency in Iceland must obtain customs clearance of their vehicle, even though the 12 month period is not expired. A copy of the temporary import clearance (form E-9) shall be available and kept with the vehicle at all times. Tourists arriving to Iceland on the ferry Norröna shall have the completed temporary import form available in the vehicle. Alternatively, they can show a copy of the booking to and from Iceland as proof of their intention to re-export the vehicle.
Individuals with permanent residency abroad and who come temporarily to the country for study or work may temporarily import a vehicle with foreign registration plates to the country. They are permitted to have the vehicle in the country for a maximum period of 12 months from their arrival and whilst they are registered as temporary residents. However, if permanent residence is granted then they must obtain customs clearance of their vehicle, even though the 12 month period has not expired. A copy of the completed temporary import form (E-9) shall be available in the vehicle during the period of the stay.
Individuals who are resident in Iceland are not permitted to temporarily import vehicles with foreign registration plates. They are required to customs clear the vehicle upon arrival to Iceland.
Tour buses and commercial vehicles
Tour buses with foreign registration plates that arrive and depart with the same group on board shall be registered in the ship manifest and copy of the completed temporary import form (E-9) shall be available in the vehicle during the period of the stay.
Tour buses or other commercial vehicles with foreign registration plates, which temporarily operate in the country shall be registered on the ship manifest upon arrival to the country. They shall be registered for temporary clearance and pay collateral/certain fees on arrival. It is permitted to operate these vehicles for a maximum period of 12 months if the fees have been paid. If the vehicle stay exceeds 12 months then the vehicle must be fully customs cleared.Back
